When you are visiting a breeder there will be some crucial signs to look for that will tell you whether or not the breeder is one that you want to get your puppy from. First off, the breeder will be very proud of their Mastiffs. They may have one or both of the parents for you to look at and you will be able to tell a lot about the breeder by the way that the dogs behave around the them.

If you are choosing a Mastiff to show, you will want to follow the AKC guidelines for show quality dogs. However, if you are selecting a pet, you can look for less than perfect looks. These dogs get very large, very quickly so if you don’t have space for your Mastiff you might want to wait until you have more space before committing to your dog.

These are very gentle and patient dogs that are great with kids. But, if you have a problem with drool or messes, you may find a Mastiff too much to handle. When you are looking at the cute little puppy, keep in mind that the puppy will grow to be at least the same size as the parent you have seen. Be sure that you are ready to make the commitment to this wonderful pet that is required.

My Mastiff was the camel each year in the Christmas Play because he was big and let the kids tie a pillow on his back so he had a hump. I had a second sofa in my living room because my dog didn’t like the floor. We had a king size bed because there was not enough room on a queen size bed for both of us. He snored, drooled, and let the kids dress him up and put galoshes on his feet in the winter.

My Mastiff loved hamburgers and when we got happy meals he always got two while the kids got one each. He also had his own seat in the car and the kids would buckle him in. Your Mastiff will be a part of your life for a long time and will only ask that you love them, care for them, and give them lots of attention. For some people this is too big a commitment to make for a long term. For other people, like myself, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
