Mixed Martial Arts…Does The Speed Bag Belong?

The use of speed bags in MMA is a controversy. Some believe that speed bags have no place in traditional boxing much less in MMA. Others are firm believers that the bags are very effective in MMA training.

Those opposed to the speed bag being used feel it does not properly capture the actual punching motion of MMA.

The fact that modern versions of the speed bags were very different that the ones of the 20th century is one reason for the assessment. While the older ones had much longer chains and larger platforms, modern ones generally have 3″ chains as opposed to the older ones of 18″ or more.

The significant difference changed the purpose of training with a speed bag. While the classic model was made for integrating slips into training, the speed bag of today has two different training devices, the modern bag (1950′s and onward) and the double end bag.

Today’s bag still has a lot of value as it helps in training is several important aspects in MMA.

One thing the speed bag has to give in boxing, kickboxing and in the MMA gym as well is that it is very effective in developing hand-eye coordination. You have to be able to hit the bag right when it comes into range, immediately when you see it coming. If you are too early or too late, you totally throw off the rhythm of the bag.

Once you have mastered effective hand-eye coordination, you can develop even more skills from using the bag such as timing. Timing is everything when it comes to the effectiveness of striking. Even the repetition of hitting the bag helps create an unconscious performance of proper timing that will certainly help in your sparring session performance.

The bag also helps in learning the ability to keep your hands up. Keeping your hands up can even prevent your nose from being broken among other reasons.

The speed bag comes at you fast is why it is called a speed bag. You have to move fast in order to hit it effectively. If you are not in the correct position, you cannot work the bag therefore you learn to keep your hands up.

Event though the bag has many attributes in training, it is still argued that is has no place in MMA and boxing. Why then do so many professionals use it?

The double end bag is a close cousin to the speed bag and is a controversial subject as well. Though many of the functions are the same, the double end bag “returns to sender” in that it simulates a counter punch. It “returns” and you must move or punch back.

The double end bag also will circle in a 360 degree angle which offers a lot in a workout. If you are really serious about developing your punching power, you will want to get a double end bag. Once you have learned the skills of this bag, you can move on to train elbows and use even more tools.

If you are going to purchase one or both of these bags, you will want to do so from a well known, established manufacturer. That wont be difficult though because there are many to choose from that have been around for decades.

Evelast is probably the most popular brand when it comes to bags and that is largely because they are in retail stores as well as available online. The products are of good quality and the prices are inexpensive.

UFC is an excellent brand that is solid and well made. It is a popular choice for good reasons.

Revgear has both bags and they are well made. This company takes great pride in it’s quality products.

TigerClaw is a lesser known brand in MMA, but very popular in other circles. Thomas Oh started the company with the idea to continue changing products with the times. Their products are great for those on a budget and you will not be disappointed with their speed bag.

Another good company to consider is KWON. Their bags are made with imitation rubber and come with a bungee.

As long as you are purchasing from a company that is well known in boxing and MMA, the bag should be fine.

If you have decided to train on the speed bag or even the double end bag, you have made a wise choice. Your workouts will build your strength and you will learn to be quick which are vital to a great training session as well as important attributes in the ring.
