Every month we hear of another great way to use LED lighting, which is quickly becoming more popular because of the reduced consumption of electricity and money saved as a result. This is why consumers just wait for new products from manufacturers so that there is yet another way that LED lights can help to reach the goal of a green future. However, LED lighting has other advantages like a long lifespan, energy efficiency, no distorted tint and it does not produce heat or attract bugs.

Converting all lights from conventional incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes and halogen units could reduce our electric power by up to 50% in just 20 years. In the United States alone, lighting makes up 6% of the total energy consumption. This could be the one most valuable asset in cutting out wasted energy that is available today.

You probably don’t realize it but LED lighting is used in more places and things than you realized. With street lights they are great because they are low maintenance and light direction can be controlled to where it’s wanted, not in bedroom windows. LED lighting is used by auto manufacturers for brake lights and Buckingham Palace is experimenting with them in the 60ft. ceiling fixtures.

However, with LED lights there are still some flaws that have to be worked out and that is normal for any new technology. As of now, LED’s can only throw light in a narrow angle focused in one direction and that means that lenses or reflectors are needed so that there is no tunneling effect. Presently there is also no possibility for the mass production of LED lights since the two materials used have to be sandwiched to force electrons to jump from one to the other and are both very delicate to handle. If an LED product is not made well, then it will not have a long lifespan and lower quality of life.

Some municipalities are taking advantage of Obama’s stimulus money for energy already proving that LED lighting is the way of the future by installing LED streetlights. The money spent today will pay for itself in just a few years. San Jose, California plans to use their energy-efficiency grants for installing 1,500 LED streetlights. Many streets and buildings in Europe are already ahead of the United States with street lights and commercial building lighting.

Familiar corporate giants General Electric and Phillips are at the moment testing and producing LED’s along with scientists and engineers working to redesign the delicate technique used now to be able to make a less expensive yet high quality LED light for the use of consumers. As it is in 2007 it proved to be a $297 million industry.

Due to unlimited creativity, there are constantly new ways to use LED lighting. In Ann Arbor, Michigan LED’s are used as street lights and the city has them programmed to get brighter only when someone approaches or to flicker outside of a home where an emergency is and paramedics have to go. The entire world is striving towards being more energy efficient and LED lighting will be a part of this trend.
