Is Using Laxatives to Lose Weight an Urban Legend?
Over fifty percent of America’s population now shares the task of trying to lose weight. Unfortunately, far too many people want to take shortcuts to weight loss rather than make the necessary adjustments to their diets and lifestyles. Using laxatives to lose weight is one of the most common quick-fix methods. The benefits of this are nothing more than a lie.
Laxatives do NOT break down the foods that one eats. What they do is stimulate the bowels, often resulting in painful cramps and having to go to the bathroom a lot more often. Matter is often expelled under force because of these cramps. But most of what is expelled is water, not fat. It might seem like someone has lost two or three pounds using laxatives, but as soon as they quit taking them, they put back on the weight as soon as they’re hydrated again.
And using laxatives too often can lead to a variety of serious health ailments. One can end up unable to have a normal bowel movement without taking a laxative. The rectum is forcing out waste, it can often suffer skin tearing, which causes bleeding and the risk of infection that is caused by waste coming in contact with the open tears around the rectal area. Laxatives can also cause our bodies to become dehydrated and weak, and play havoc with normal bodily functions.
Many have claimed that laxatives not only speed up weight loss, but help people keep the weight off. This information should not be trusted or believed, because it is flat-out wrong. Rather, using laxatives as a form of weight loss is symptomatic of a serious eating disorder called bulimia. The biggest difference is that bulimics use purgatives to make them vomit up the food they eat and force any that stays down out of the system by a laxative action while the use of laxatives is slightly milder and does not usually involve vomiting.
Using a laxative for a prolonged time also can cause nausea and induce vomiting; your whole system will be unbalanced. It’s a sad fact, but many people who use laxatives in this way end up needing medical intervention to get them free of laxatives.
Some people may claim that using laxatives is a good route to rapid weight loss. Using laxatives, or any medication, for a quick-fix to your long-term weight loss goal is a fairytale; a fairytale that is not only absurd, but potentially deadly.
