The first thing you need is a piece of unfinished wood furniture. The second thing that you will need is a wood burning tool. If you have a creative talent (especially for drawing) then a wood burning craft is the perfect finish for you. Wood burning is similar to drawing so you get a very individual finish. Here are the tools you will need to get the wood burning finish:

- Any unfinished wood furniture like chairs, tables etc.

- Wood burning tool

- Wood burning tool tip

- Painter’s tape

- Pencil

- Paper

- Graphite sheet

This furniture is usually pre made although you can buy it flat packed. Pine is cheapest and will give you an easy base to start your design on. Other woods are more expensive but they may suit your room style better.

So to start your wood burning you should warm up the tool. This can take several minutes so why not take the time to lay out your other bits that you need. Get a large piece of drawing paper and lay it on the floor. Trace around the furniture and begin to draw your design onto the piece of paper.

Once the design is ready, transfer it to your unfinished furniture with a graphite paper sheet. Lay the drawing on the unfinished furniture and tape it in place using painter’s tape. Trace the design with a pencil onto the furniture. When you remove the paper, you can begin to wood burn your unfinished furniture.

After plugging your wood-burning tool and heating it up, using the pre-drawn guidelines, begin engraving the unfinished furniture. Using the wood burning tool tip, trace out the design. You can add more details if you prefer. You can also use stencil designs if you like.

Once the wood burning is complete you should think about preserving your artwork. By applying a layer of stain or varnish you can make sure that your wood burning effect will stay on your furniture for a lifetime. Be sure to dry the stain or varnish at least 24 hours before you move the furniture as it can take quite a while. Also do not forget to add some felt squares onto the bottom of the feet so you can protect your floor as well.
