1950s Decor

Did you fall in love with the 1950s watching old movies and televisions shows like “Happy Days” and “The Andy Griffith Show”? Well there is a way to bring the 1950s into your 21st century home. While trying to achieve a retro look can become expensive there are many tricks of the trade that will not completely blow your budget.

In order to get the real feel of the 50′s decor is to travel back in time at grandma’s house. Depending on your age now, your grandparents might have been a teenager in the 50′s. This is the first place to start in your quest to go retro. While you are visiting you want to go through all the photos you can. Check in the attic or basement to see if you can find things that go into that era. Ask your grandparents about that style during the 50′s. What they tell you will help you create the style you are looking for.

You may actually notice that this 50s look is almost considered as a more modern when you start looking into it, instead of being classified as an older style. The types of furniture that were used in the 50s were straight lined and some vibrant colors. A nice bright room can make you and guests feel happy and at ease.

When researching your design ideas for your retro 1950s look you will quickly find that most of this “old” style is actually considered “modern” by today’s standards. Most of the furniture in this era had very clean lines and abstract accessories. The colors were bright and vibrant and it was a look that was both stylish and a little whimsical at the same time.

When it comes to purchasing the items needed for this design most can be found at second hand stores or flea markets, however if you are wanting to have a 1950s style kitchen the prices of the larger appliances will be very expensive. The reason for this is that the manufactures have to meet all modern codes while using a “retro” frame. This is what will make the price soar.

Rugs are especially popular in this design. Purchase rugs that are bright in color and abstract. Look for wool rugs or shag rugs. This was not only popular in the 50′s but the 60′s and 70′s as well.

Keep in mind that it is important to find the balance between the “retro style” and the modern style. Although it is going to cost more money for this look it will be worth every penny.
